News, Education and Events

Welcome to the September edition of the Surefire Scoop!

Hoping you had a great Labor Day weekend. If you’re new to the newsletter, or have been keeping up for awhile… We’re so glad you’re here. We believe clarity creates confidence—and confidence leads to a more joyful life.
Our hope is that the Scoop feels less like a friendly check-in—something you can look forward to reading each month. You’ll find timely updates, practical insights, and community news to help you stay in the know and inspired along the way.

HEALTH, WELLNESS AND INDEPENDENCE
Morning Walks and Independence
At 102 years old, Dr. Gladys McGarey—known as the “mother of holistic medicine”—still walks daily. She credits her independence and sharpness of mind to movement: “The body is designed to move. If you stop moving, you stop living.” Even 20 minutes of walking a day can improve balance, boost mood, and reduce healthcare costs in later life. (More)

Gut Health & Everyday Resilience
A healthy gut doesn’t just support digestion—it impacts energy, mood, and even immunity. Several natural compounds are drawing attention for their role in soothing and strengthening the digestive system such as Inulin, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), Slippery elm, Marshmallow root, Licorice root, and Collagen. Together, these ingredients may promote balance, reduce discomfort, and help the gut function more smoothly—an important step toward overall wellness. Check out this cool resource to learn more! Health Insurance Costs Could Rise Sharply in 2026
Health insurance premiums are projected to climb substantially in 2026—especially for ACA marketplace plans. If enhanced premium subsidies are not renewed, costs could spike by as much as 75% for some. Even employer plans are expected to shift more costs onto employees with higher premiums, deductibles, and prescription costs. Experts suggest using HSAs, seeking generic alternatives, and working with providers to mitigate the financial impact. (More)

Cracking Down on United Healthcare
UnitedHealth Group has been rapidly expanding into home health and hospice, but regulators and watchdogs are raising red flags. The Department of Justice recently sued to block their $3.3 billion purchase of Amedisys, warning it would stifle competition. UnitedHealth was forced to agree to sell off over 160 locations across 19 states. At the same time, a Guardian investigation revealed the company secretly paid nursing homes to limit hospital transfers—even when patients needed critical care. (More)

FINANCIAL NEWS
Standard Deduction Hike Widens 0% Capital Gains Eligibility
A recent tax law didn’t change capital gains rates but did raise the standard deduction and add a temporary break for those 65+. As a result, more investors may now qualify for the 0% capital gains bracket—taxable incomes up to $48,350 (single) or $96,700 (married). (More)

What’s the WISH Act?
The Well-Being Insurance for Seniors to be at Home (WISH) Act is a bipartisan proposal that would create a federal insurance benefit to help older Americans afford long-term care at home. It would be funded through a trust and is designed not to disrupt eligibility for programs like SNAP. (More)

Avoiding the Medicare IRMAA Taxes
Medicare beneficiaries facing higher costs due to the two-year rule for the income-related monthly adjustment amount can appeal if their income has dropped because of a major life event. Some advisors recommend strategies such as Roth IRA conversions before age 63, maximizing retirement plan contributions and delaying Social Security to minimize the IRMAA's effect. (More)

One Stock vs. One Country
Nvidia alone traded $50 billion in a single day, while all 100 of the UK’s largest companies together managed just $3.2 billion. It’s a striking reminder of how much bigger and faster U.S. markets move, and how investor appetite for AI has created trading volumes that rival entire national exchanges. (More)

Privatized Social Security?
Privatizing Social Security would replace government-managed funds with personal investment accounts, giving individuals more control and the potential for higher returns. However, it would also increase market risk, require greater financial literacy, and reduce the predictability of retirement income. Supporters highlight personal choice and possible wealth growth, while critics warn of higher risks and unequal outcomes. (More)

ESTATE AND LEGACY
The Real Benefits of a Trust
Trusts do more than avoid probate — they can protect privacy, ensure smooth management if you’re incapacitated, and give you control over how and when assets are passed on. (More)

The importance of Powers of Attorney
When most people hear “estate planning,” they picture wills, trusts, and tax strategies. But just as important are two often-overlooked documents that safeguard your daily life: Powers of Attorney (POAs). (More)
